This document specifies the characteristics of solid-wall pipes made of oriented unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-O) for piping systems intended to be used underground or above-ground (where protected from direct sunlight), for water supply, buried drainage, sewerage, treated wastewater and irrigation under pressure. It also specifies the test parameters for the test methods referred to in this document. In conjunction with ISO 16422-1 and ISO 16422-5, this document is applicable to oriented PVC-O pipes, with or without integral socket, intended to be used for the following: a) water mains and services lines; b) conveyance of water for both outside and inside buildings; c) drainage, sewerage and treated wastewater under pressure; d) irrigation under pressure. This document is applicable to piping systems intended for the supply of water under pressure up to and including 25 °C (cold water), intended for human consumption and for general purposes as well as for wastewater under pressure. This document is also applicable to components for the conveyance of water and wastewater up to and including 45 °C. For temperatures between 25 °C and 45 °C, see Figure C.1. The piping system according to this document is intended for the conveyance of cold water up to pressures of 25 bar[1] and especially in those applications where special performance requirements are needed, such as impact loads and pressure fluctuations, up to pressure of 25 bar. [1] 1 bar = 0,1 MPa = 105 Pa; 1 MPa = 1 N/mm2
Abstract
Overview
ISO 16422-2:2024 specifies the requirements and characteristics for solid-wall pipes made of oriented unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-O), designed for piping systems to convey water under pressure. Applicable for both underground and above-ground (when protected from direct sunlight) installations, this standard addresses performance for water supply, buried drainage, pressurized sewerage, treated wastewater, and irrigation.
This part of ISO 16422 is harmonized with ISO 16422-1 and ISO 16422-5 to offer a comprehensive framework for PVC-O pipe systems, ensuring quality, durability, and safety in their intended applications. It outlines relevant material specifications, mechanical and physical characteristics, geometrical requirements, and marking guidelines, enabling manufacturers, installers, and end users to achieve reliable performance for water and wastewater transmission.
Key Topics
- Material Requirements: Defines properties of oriented unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-O), including density and minimum required strength (MRS) classes.
- Mechanical and Physical Characteristics: Specifies criteria for hydrostatic pressure resistance, impact strength, ring stiffness, and opacity for pipes under pressure and various environmental conditions.
- Dimensional Standards: Details nominal outside diameters and wall thicknesses, tolerances, ovality, and classification by pressure rating (PN) and series (S).
- Pipe Types: Covers both plain-end and integral socket pipes (including types with elastomeric sealing rings), with requirements for minimum engagement and joint performance.
- Application Temperature Range: Suitable for water temperatures up to 25 °C under pressure, extending up to 45 °C with application of temperature derating factors.
- Marking and Identification: Sets out requirements for clear marking to indicate pipe type, material class, nominal size, pressure rating, and manufacturer details.
Applications
Solid-wall PVC-O pipes specified by ISO 16422-2:2024 are engineered for robust and versatile performance in:
- Water Mains and Service Lines: Providing durable, corrosion-resistant solutions for potable water transmission networks.
- Underground and Above-Ground Piping: Can be used below ground and, when protected, above ground, supporting municipal, industrial, and building piping needs.
- Pressurized Drainage and Sewerage: Effectively conveys both untreated and treated wastewater under pressure in urban and rural infrastructures.
- Irrigation Systems: Reliable for agricultural irrigation networks requiring high impact strength, resistance to pressure fluctuations, and ease of installation.
- Building Water Supply: Suitable for exterior and interior use, provided pipes are not exposed to prolonged direct sunlight.
- Special Performance Conditions: Designed for pipelines that may experience impact loads or pressure variations up to 25 bar.
These pipes are selected for projects that demand lightweight installation, long-term reliability, and cost-efficient maintenance, making them ideal for modern infrastructure upgrades and new installations.
Related Standards
For comprehensive system compatibility and extended application, ISO 16422-2:2024 should be used in conjunction with:
- ISO 16422-1: General requirements for PVC-O piping systems under pressure.
- ISO 16422-5: Fitness-for-purpose requirements for system performance, especially for joints.
- ISO 161-1, ISO 11922-1: Dimensional standards for thermoplastics pipes.
- ISO 1167-1, ISO 1167-2: Methods for testing resistance to internal hydrostatic pressure.
- ISO 3126, ISO 3127: Measurement of dimensions and impact resistance of plastic pipes.
- ISO 4065: Universal thickness tables for thermoplastics pipes.
- ISO 7686: Determination of opacity for plastics pipes.
- ISO 4633: Specifications for elastomeric seals used in pressure pipes.
For non-PVC-O components or compatibility with other materials (such as PVC-U or cast iron), reference to ISO 1452-3 or EN 12842 may be made.
