ISO 16695:2014 defines reference models representing the geomagnetic field. It closely mirrors and clarifies specifications which have been in use for many decades. The approach is to represent the corresponding scalar magnetic potential by a spherical harmonic expansion having specified numerical coefficients, called Gauss coefficients. ISO 16695:2014 covers models in which, at any one time, changes of the magnetic field are modelled by a linear time-dependence of each Gauss coefficient. A model might consist of a succession of sub-models, in each of which the coefficients change linearly with time. For such a step-wise linear model, the coefficients are continuous in time. ISO 16695:2014 provides the formulae and a step-by-step computational procedure to evaluate a geomagnetic reference model for any desired location and date. ISO 16695:2014 does not specify the interpretation of the geophysical content of a geomagnetic reference model. It is left to the producer of a model to specify which internal and external magnetic sources are included in (or excluded from) their model.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 16695:2014 - Space environment (natural and artificial) - Geomagnetic reference models - defines a formal specification for representing the Earth's magnetic field as geomagnetic reference models. The standard prescribes representing the scalar magnetic potential by a spherical harmonic expansion with specified numerical Gauss coefficients, including linear time-dependence (secular variation) of coefficients. It provides the formulae and a step‑by‑step computational procedure to evaluate a geomagnetic reference model for any location and date, and clarifies use of geocentric and geodetic (WGS84) reference frames.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Spherical harmonic representation: magnetic potential expressed via Gauss coefficients (degree/order expansion).
- Time dependence: each Gauss coefficient may have a linear time variation; models can be a sequence of sub-models with step-wise linear coefficients that are continuous in time.
- Reference frames: explicit treatment of geocentric and geodetic coordinates, with geodetic → geocentric transforms based on WGS84.
- Magnetic components and elements: synthesis produces geocentric vector components (X′, Y′, Z′) and procedures to obtain geodetic elements (X, Y, Z, H, F, I, D).
- Computation procedures: formulae and step-by-step algorithm to evaluate the model at specified latitude/longitude, altitude/radius and epoch.
- Model metadata: specification of epoch, validity interval, reference radius, spatial wavelength and RMS differences between models.
- Scope limitation: ISO 16695:2014 does not prescribe geophysical interpretation - producers must state which internal/external sources (core, crustal, induced, external currents) are included or excluded.
Practical applications and users
ISO 16695:2014 is used wherever a standardized, reproducible geomagnetic reference is required:
- Aerospace and satellite systems - attitude determination, magnetometer calibration, and on-board navigation.
- Space weather and magnetospheric/ionospheric research - modeling near‑Earth and magnetospheric fields.
- Geophysical surveying and mapping - regional magnetic anomaly correction and baseline field computation.
- Navigation systems and maritime/aviation operators - magnetic declination/variation and heading corrections.
- Defense, remote sensing and academic users needing validated reference fields and secular variation forecasts.
Related standards and references
- International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) conventions and Gauss coefficient practice are mirrored in this ISO standard.
- Coordinate and geodetic references follow WGS84 conventions and ISO/TC guidance (e.g., ISO 19111 referenced for coordinate nomenclature).
- Model producers should document included sources and validity intervals to support interoperability and reproducibility.
