This document specifies a method for assessing the matting appearance of the napped fabrics (fleece fabrics) tested, after one or several cleansing treatments. This method has been developed for use primarily with Type B domestic washing machines, as defined in ISO 6330, in the cleansing process. However, it is possible to use it with Type A machines, as defined in ISO 6330. This test method can be used for judging matting appearance after other cleansing processes.

ISO 16847:2025 - Textiles - Test method for assessing the matting appearance of napped fabrics after cleansing - specifies a standardized visual method to evaluate how the raised surface (nap) of napped or fleece fabrics changes (matting) after laundering or other cleansing processes. The method is intended primarily for use with Type B domestic washing machines as defined in ISO 6330, but can also be applied with Type A machines or professional/industrial processes when agreed by the parties involved.

Viewing and lighting: Darkened room with specified overhead cool-white fluorescent lighting and a grey viewing board painted to match Grade 2 of the ISO 105‑A03 grey scale; side reflections should be controlled.

Assessment procedure: Three independent observers rate each specimen from Grade 5 (no change) to Grade 1 (dense matting). Observers stand approximately 1.2 m from the board. Photographic rating standards may be used if agreed.

Result expression: Calculate the median of nine observations (three observers × three specimens) and report to the nearest half grade.

Reporting: Test report must reference ISO 16847:2025 and include sample details, cleansing procedure, number of cycles, grading scheme used (descriptive or photographic), number of specimens/observers, ratings, date, and any deviations or unusual features.
