ISO 16891:2016 specifies a standard reference test method useful to assess the relative degradation characteristics of cleanable filter media for industrial applications under standardized simulated test conditions. The main purpose of testing is to obtain the information about relative change of properties of filter media due to exposure to the simulated gas conditions for a long time. The main target of this International Standard is the property change of nonwoven fabric filters because they are frequently used under similar circumstances to the test gas conditions described in this International Standard. The results obtained from this test method are not intended for predicting the absolute properties of full scale filter facilities. However, they are helpful for the design of a bag filter and selection and development of appropriate cleanable filter media, and for the identification of suitable operating parameters.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 16891:2016 - Test methods for evaluating degradation of characteristics of cleanable filter media - provides a standardized laboratory method to assess the relative degradation of cleanable filter media (primarily nonwoven fabric filters) when exposed to simulated hot and/or corrosive gas conditions. The method is intended to help designers, manufacturers and users evaluate how filter media properties (for example tensile strength and air permeability) change with long‑term exposure; it is not intended to predict absolute performance of full‑scale filter installations.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Purpose: Assess relative change of filter media properties after exposure to simulated gas conditions to inform selection, development and operating parameter choices.
- Target materials: Primarily nonwoven fabric cleanable filter media commonly used in bag filters and industrial dust collection.
- Test principle: Controlled exposure of sample sheets in an exposure chamber (batch or continuous‑flow) to defined heating and corrosive gas conditions, followed by measurement of physical property changes.
- Specimen preparation: Guidance on sample sheet selection, cutting tensile specimens (strip method), and selection by air permeability measurement.
- Exposure systems: Requirements for exposure chamber, heating system, test gas supply, gas analyzers and gas treatment devices to maintain reproducible test conditions.
- Exposure procedures: Options for batch-type (non‑continuous) and continuous-flow exposure, including replacement of test gas and defined exposure periods and number of exposures.
- Measurements and characterization: Post‑exposure tensile strength testing (retention of tensile strength, elongation metrics) using standardized tensile devices and methods; suggested evaluation approaches for characterizing degradation.
- Informative annexes: Causes and results of degradation, possible evaluation methods, theoretical degradation mechanisms, experimental setup examples, service temperature guidance, measured data examples and an example test report.
Practical applications and users
ISO 16891 is practical for:
- Filter media manufacturers evaluating material durability against heat and corrosive gases.
- Bag filter and dust collector designers selecting media and defining safety factors and replacement intervals.
- Plant operators and maintenance teams assessing expected service life and establishing operating parameters to minimize degradation.
- R&D and material developers comparing candidate nonwoven formulations and surface treatments for resistance to gas‑phase degradation.
- Regulatory or procurement specialists requiring standardized comparative data for vendor selection.
Using ISO 16891 test data helps reduce risk of premature bag failure, dust leakage, and unplanned shutdowns by enabling informed media selection and operating decisions.
