ISO 16900-12:2016 specifies the test methods for determining the volume-averaged work of breathing and peak respiratory pressures imposed by the respiratory protective device (RPD). Elastic work, elastic physiological effects, and information on physiological effects of work of breathing (WOB) are specified in ISO 16976‑4 and are not included in this test method.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 16900-12:2016 specifies standardized test methods for determining the volume-averaged work of breathing (WOB/V) and peak respiratory pressures imposed by a respiratory protective device (RPD). The standard defines the principle, required apparatus, data acquisition rates, validation steps and calculation methods used to quantify pressure–volume behavior of complete RPDs or respiratory interfaces. Note: elastic work and physiological effects of WOB are covered separately in ISO 16976‑4 and are not part of this test method.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and purpose: Measurement of WOB (work of breathing) per breath and peak inspiratory/expiratory pressures for RPDs.
- Test apparatus: Use a breathing machine or metabolic simulator compliant with ISO 16900‑5, an appropriate RPD headform/torso, pressure transducers and a displacement sensor for piston volume measurement.
- Signal capture: Pressure and volume signals acquired at a minimum of 100 Hz per channel; pressure measurement system must handle frequencies up to 50 Hz with
