This document is one part of the ISO 16976 series that provide information on factors related to human anthropometry, physiology, ergonomics, and performance for the preparation of standards for design, testing, and use of respiratory protective devices. This document contains information related to anthropometry. In particular, information is given for: — anthropometric measurement methods; — anthropometric data for head, face, and neck dimensions; — anthropometric data for torso dimensions; — human test panels; — models of headforms.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 16976-2:2022 - "Respiratory protective devices - Human factors - Part 2: Anthropometrics" provides standardized anthropometric methods and data to support the design, testing and use of respiratory protective devices (RPDs). Part of the ISO 16976 series, this document focuses on human body measurements (head, face, neck, torso), recommended measurement instruments and procedures, human test panels, and models of headforms used in respirator development and testing.
Key Topics
- Anthropometric measurement methods
- Recommended tools: anthropometer, spreading and sliding callipers, measuring tape, pupillometer.
- Use of the Frankfort plane and standard landmarking procedures (see Annex A) for reliable, repeatable measurements.
- Dimensions and data sets
- Standardized list of face, head, neck and torso dimensions (e.g., head breadth, head circumference, interpupillary distance, nose breadth, neck circumference, stature, mass).
- Measurement units and data recording guidance (dimensions in millimetres, mass in kilograms).
- Population data and test panels
- Reference anthropometric datasets including the large NIOSH US survey (3 997 subjects: 2 543 males, 1 454 females) and supplemental measurements from other countries.
- Guidance on creating representative human test panels (bivariate and PCA-based panels) for fit and performance testing.
- Headform and torso models
- Specifications and mean dimensions for headforms and torso fixtures to be used in laboratory test methods and product evaluation.
- Supporting materials
- Informative and normative annexes with landmark diagrams, dimension definitions, and examples of test panel applications.
Applications
- Designing respirator facepieces, seals and harnesses with accurate human-fit considerations.
- Establishing representative fit-test panels for pass/fail criteria and size ranges.
- Developing and validating laboratory headforms and torso fixtures for standardized RPD testing.
- Informing ergonomic assessments, usability testing, and regulatory standards development for PPE.
Who should use this standard
- Respirator and PPE manufacturers (product designers, R&D teams)
- Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies conducting respirator performance and fit testing
- Occupational safety professionals and ergonomists assessing device fit and comfort
- Standards developers and regulators specifying test methods and performance criteria
