Overview
ISO 17053:2005 specifies an infrared (IR) method after fusion under inert gas for the determination of oxygen in steel and iron. The standard covers the analytical procedure in which a test portion is fused in a single-use graphite crucible under high-purity helium, oxygen is converted to CO (and CO2), and the resulting gas is measured by infrared absorption against potassium nitrate calibration standards. The method is applicable to oxygen mass fractions from 0.00075 % to 0.01 %.
