ISO 17860:2014 specifies the testing method to determine the drying loss of granulated ceramic powders. The drying loss of granulated ceramic powders means the loss of mass that occurs from drying under specified conditions.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 17860:2014 specifies a standardized test method for determining the drying loss of granulated ceramic powders (fine ceramics / advanced ceramics). Drying loss is the mass loss that occurs when granulated ceramic powders are dried under specified conditions - typically due to removal of water, solvents or volatile additives. The standard defines two accepted procedures (drying oven and moisture analyser), required apparatus, sampling, calculation and reporting requirements.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Applies to granulated ceramic powders used in advanced/technical ceramics to quantify drying loss (percentage mass loss).
- Principle: Drying loss L (%) = (m1 − m2) / m1 × 100, where m1 = initial (as‑received) mass and m2 = mass after drying.
- Two procedures:
- Procedure 1 - Drying oven:
- Oven temperature: (110 ± 5) °C typical (select lower if organics decompose).
- Drying time: 2 h (with repeat drying until mass change
- Procedure 1 - Drying oven:
