This document specifies methods for the laboratory determination of the water flow characteristics in soil. This document is applicable to the laboratory determination of the coefficient of permeability of soil within the scope of geotechnical investigations. NOTE This document fulfils the requirements of the determination of the coefficient of permeability of soils in the laboratory for geotechnical investigation and testing in accordance with EN 1997-1 and EN 1997-2.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 17892-11:2019 - "Geotechnical investigation and testing - Laboratory testing of soil - Part 11: Permeability tests" specifies internationally harmonized laboratory methods to determine water flow characteristics and the coefficient of permeability (k) of soils. The standard covers test apparatus, specimen preparation, measurement procedures (constant head, falling head and constant flow), data reduction and reporting. Tests are based on Darcy’s law for laminar, saturated flow and are applicable to undisturbed, re‑moulded, compacted or reconstituted soil specimens. ISO 17892-11:2019 also fulfils laboratory permeability requirements of EN 1997-1 and EN 1997-2.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and definitions: clear definitions of permeameter, flow rate, discharge velocity, hydraulic gradient and coefficient of permeability.
- Apparatus: requirements for permeameters (rigid wall - cylindrical and oedometer ring - and flexible wall), porous discs, measurement and control devices, and materials resistant to corrosion.
- Specimen dimensions: permeameter internal dimensions shall be at least six times the maximum particle size to avoid scale effects.
- Test procedures: guidelines for saturation, selection of hydraulic gradient, temperature control, and use of constant head, falling head or constant flow testing.
- Measurements and calculations: determination of flow volume, discharge velocity, hydraulic gradient and temperature correction of k.
- Calibration and quality assurance: Annex A (normative) specifies calibration, maintenance and checks for apparatus and measuring devices.
- Reporting: mandatory and optional report items include specimen description, bulk/dry density, water content, degree of saturation, measured flow data and corrected coefficient of permeability.
Applications and users
ISO 17892-11:2019 is intended for:
- Geotechnical and civil engineers performing site investigations and seepage analyses
- Accredited testing laboratories conducting laboratory permeability tests
- Consultants and contractors needing reliable soil hydraulic properties for design of foundations, earthworks, retaining structures, landfills, drainage systems and groundwater flow models
- Researchers and educators standardizing lab protocols for permeability testing
Practical uses include deriving permeability values for numerical modeling, assessing consolidation and drainage behavior, and validating field permeability tests.
