Overview
ISO 18202:2015 - "Space data and information transfer systems - Mission operations message abstraction layer (MAL)" is an ISO adoption of the CCSDS recommended standard that defines the MAL in an abstract, implementation‑neutral way. The standard specifies the core concepts, basic data types, message headers, and the valid message sequences and resulting behaviours needed for mission‑operations messaging. It intentionally does not define concrete products, coding patterns, or communication technologies - it provides the abstract contract that implementations should follow to achieve interoperability.
Key Topics
- Abstract interface and service specifications: Defines service primitives, interaction patterns and their semantics without tying them to a transport or technology.
- Message composition and headers: Specifies required message header elements and how messages are decomposed into header and body.
- Interaction patterns: Includes standard MO patterns such as SEND, SUBMIT, REQUEST, INVOKE, PROGRESS and PUBLISH‑SUBSCRIBE (as shown in the standard’s interaction pattern diagrams).
- MAL data type specification: Defines fundamental types and composite structures used by mission operations messages.
- Error and state handling: Describes error conditions, transaction handling and consumer/provider state transitions for robust message flows.
- Access control and transport interfaces: Abstract descriptions of access control checks and transport interaction requirements (e.g., SUPPORTEDQOS, TRANSMIT, RECEIVE).
- Notable updates (Issue 2): ability to reference external data type specifications (e.g., XML Schemas), XML moved to the SANA registry, type short forms changed to integers, optional fields shown in composites, lists changed to templates, and additions such as unsigned integer and File data types.
Applications
ISO 18202:2015 is used to:
- Design mission‑operations middleware and messaging layers that are interoperable across ground and space systems.
- Provide an abstract specification for architects and system integrators to map service semantics to concrete transports and protocols.
- Serve as the normative basis for vendors and agencies implementing MO services while preserving flexibility in technology choices.
- Inform conformance matrices, service interface XML descriptions and test plans for mission operations messaging.
Who uses it: mission systems architects, spacecraft and ground‑segment software developers, standards teams within space agencies, systems integrators, and vendors developing mission operations middleware.
Related Standards
- CCSDS Mission Operations Message Abstraction Layer (CCSDS 521.0-B-2) - the original CCSDS Blue Book adopted as ISO 18202:2015.
- Other CCSDS space data and communications standards for transport, security and service registries (see the CCSDS library and the SANA registry for related artefacts).
