ISO 18243:2017 specifies the test procedures for lithium-ion battery packs and systems used in electrically propelled mopeds and motorcycles. The specified test procedures enable the user of this document to determine the essential characteristics on performance, safety and reliability of lithium-ion battery packs and systems. The user is also supported to compare the test results achieved for different battery packs or systems. ISO 18243:2017 enables setting up a dedicated test plan for an individual battery pack or system subject to an agreement between customer and supplier. If required, the relevant test procedures and/or test conditions of lithium-ion battery packs and systems are selected from the standard tests provided in this document to configure a dedicated test plan. NOTE 1 Electrically power-assisted cycles (EPAC) cannot be considered as mopeds. The definition of electrically power-assisted cycles can differ from country to country. An example of definition can be found in the EU Directive 2002/24/EC. NOTE 2 Testing on cell level is specified in IEC 62660 (all parts).
Abstract
Overview
ISO 18243:2017 - Electrically propelled mopeds and motorcycles: Test specifications and safety requirements for lithium‑ion battery packs and systems - defines standardized test procedures to evaluate the essential characteristics of battery packs and systems used in electric mopeds and motorcycles. The standard helps determine performance, safety and reliability, enables direct comparison between different battery packs/systems, and supports creation of a dedicated test plan by selecting relevant test procedures through customer‑supplier agreement.
Important scope notes:
- Applies to lithium‑ion battery packs and systems (system‑level testing).
- Cell‑level testing is outside this standard and is covered by IEC 62660 (all parts).
- Electrically power‑assisted cycles (EPAC) are not considered mopeds under this document; definitions may vary by jurisdiction (see EU Directive 2002/24/EC as an example).
Key Topics and Technical Requirements
ISO 18243:2017 organizes test methods and requirements into performance and safety/reliability sections. Key technical topics include:
- General test preparation
- Preparation of Device Under Test (DUT), pre‑conditioning cycles, and the Standard Cycle (SC).
- Performance tests
- Energy and capacity at room temperature and at different temperatures & discharge rates.
- Power capability and internal resistance (pulse power characterization).
- State‑of‑charge (SOC) loss: no‑load SOC loss and SOC loss during storage.
- Cycle life and degradation behavior.
- Safety and reliability tests
- Mechanical: vibration, mechanical shock, drop.
- Environmental: thermal shock, water immersion, dewing, salt spray.
- Hazard and protection: fire exposure, overtemperature, short‑circuit protection, overcharge and overdischarge protection.
- Test procedure structure
- Specified test sequences, pass/fail requirements, and selection rules for configuring bespoke test plans.
Practical Applications & Who Uses It
ISO 18243:2017 is used by:
- OEMs and electric two‑wheeler manufacturers for type approval and supplier qualification.
- Battery pack designers and suppliers to validate performance, safety, and to demonstrate product claims.
- Independent test laboratories performing standardized provable testing and reporting.
- Quality, compliance and procurement teams comparing battery system performance across suppliers.
- R&D and reliability engineers for durability testing, failure analysis, and system validation.
Typical uses:
- Developing test programs for product launch and regulatory compliance.
- Supplier audits and comparative benchmarking of battery systems.
- Establishing contractual test plans between customer and supplier.
Related Standards
- IEC 62660 (all parts) - Cell‑level lithium‑ion battery testing.
