Values are specified only for those merchant categories that are generally expected to originate retail financial transactions. Overview

ISO 18245:2023 - Retail financial services - Merchant category codes defines a standardized set of merchant category codes (MCCs) used to classify merchants by the type of business, trade or services supplied. This second edition (2023) replaces ISO 18245:2003 and restructures the standard to facilitate maintenance by a dedicated ISO 18245 maintenance agency (MA). The standard specifies code values only for merchant categories that are generally expected to originate retail financial transactions and does not mandate the use of MCCs in any given situation.

Scope limitation: Codes apply only to merchant categories likely to originate retail financial activity; the standard does not require implementation.

Code allocation principles: New merchant categories shall receive a code that is reasonable, substantially different, and separate and distinct from existing codes.

Maintenance: Code assignments are maintained by the ISO 18245 maintenance agency; the MA’s scope and responsibilities are defined in the MA Guidelines for ISO 18245.

Change control: Additions, changes or deletions of code values require applicants to submit a merchant category code application to the ISO 18245 MA for approval.

Documentation: The published list of assigned and reserved codes is maintained online by the MA (see link above).
