ISO 18254-1:2016 describes analyses that are used to detect extractable alkylphenol ethoxylates (nonylphenol ethoxylates and octylphenol ethoxylates) in textile products. This document provides a method that uses Liquid Chromatograph (LC) with Mass Spectrometry (MS) system to detect and quantify alkylphenol ethoxylates of defined ethoxylate chain length.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 18254-1:2016 specifies a validated laboratory method for the detection and determination of extractable alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEO) - specifically nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEO) and octylphenol ethoxylates (OPEO) - in textile products using HPLC-MS / LC‑MS (ESI). The standard defines sample preparation, chromatographic and mass-spectrometric conditions, calibration and calculation approaches, and reporting requirements to quantify defined ethoxylate chain lengths (EO2 to EO16).
Key Topics
- Scope & purpose: Detection and quantification of extractable APEOs in textiles to support regulatory compliance and product safety.
- Principle: Cut textile (~1 g), extract with 20 mL methanol using ultrasound at 70 °C (60 ± 5 min), cool, filter (0.45 μm) and analyse by LC-MS without further cleanup.
- Analytes and range: Congeners with 2 to 16 ethoxylate groups (EO2–EO16) are targeted and quantified as sums of NPEOs and OPEOs (reported in mg/kg).
- Reagents & buffers: HPLC-grade methanol, acetonitrile, water, ammonium acetate buffer (10 mM, pH 3.6) and formic acid - all of analytical/HPLC quality.
- Chromatography & MS: Reverse‑phase LC with gradient elution (example: ammonium acetate 10 mM / ACN; Annex A gradient from ~40–98% ACN), typical flow ~250–300 μL/min, injection ~5 μL, column temp ~40 °C; electrospray ionization (positive mode) and MS scan or MS/MS detection. Annex A and B include example LC/MS and LC/MS/MS parameters and target m/z values for [M + NH4]+ ions.
- Calibration & quantification: Multi‑point calibration (e.g., 0.5, 2, 5 mg/L); correlation coefficient requirements stated in the standard (calibration curve correlation coefficient > 0.990; guidance also refers to R > 0.995). Results below 50 mg/kg should be reported as “less than 50 mg/kg.”
- Reporting: Reports must reference ISO 18254-1:2016 and include sample ID, method details (target EO range, standards), numeric results (sum NPEOs and OPEOs in mg/kg) and any deviations.
Applications
- Who uses it: Textile manufacturers, third‑party testing laboratories, regulatory bodies, importers/brands and compliance teams.
- Why use it: To verify textile products for APEO content for environmental and human‑health risk management, to demonstrate compliance with EU REACH restrictions (Entry 46 / Annex XVII) and to support product screening, quality control and supplier verification.
- Practical value: Provides reproducible extraction and LC‑MS procedures that laboratories can adopt to generate comparable quantitative data for enforcement, certification and supply‑chain risk mitigation.
