This document specifies the requirements for medium tolerance sling chains of grade 4 from stainless steel for use preferably in chain slings of grade 4 from stainless steel or for other lifting purposes. The range of nominal diameter, dn, covered by this document is from 4 mm to 22 mm. These sling chains are round steel short link chains with a nominal pitch, pn = 3 × dn, electrically welded, solution-annealed and tested. They are for use in the temperature range ?100 °C to +400 °C. They comply with the general conditions of acceptance of ISO 1834. NOTE 1 Because sling chains are solution-annealed in the finished condition, they can be used without restrictions with regard to the corrosion resistance of the steels according to 5.2. Higher grades of stainless steel chains are achieved by cold drawing of the wire prior to the chain manufacturing. Therefore, solution annealing is not possible without reduction of strength. The weld seam, in particular, represents a critical area with regard to the corrosion resistance. NOTE 2 Resistance butt welding and flash welding are listed in ISO 4063.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 1835:2018 specifies requirements for round steel short link sling chains - Grade 4, stainless steel used for lifting purposes. It covers medium-tolerance sling chains with nominal diameters from 4 mm to 22 mm, electrically welded, solution-annealed and tested. Chains conforming to ISO 1835:2018 are intended primarily for chain slings of grade 4 stainless steel or other lifting applications and are suitable for service temperatures from −100 °C to +400 °C. The standard complements the general conditions of acceptance in ISO 1834.
Key Topics
- Scope and sizing
- Nominal diameter (dn) range: 4–22 mm.
- Nominal pitch: pn = 3 × dn.
- Dimensions, masses and designation rules are defined (calculation bases in annexes).
- Material
- Austenitic, molybdenum-alloyed stainless steels resistant to intergranular corrosion (example: X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2 / S31635).
- Solution annealing required to secure corrosion resistance after manufacture.
- Heat treatment & surface
- Solution anneal at defined temperatures (see ISO 16143-2) and rapid cooling.
- Pickling after heat treatment to ensure a smooth, corrosion-resistant surface.
- Manufacture & welding
- Electrical welding of links; weld seam is a critical corrosion area.
- Welding processes such as resistance butt and flash welding are referenced (ISO 4063).
- Mechanical requirements & testing
- Working Load Limit (WLL), Manufacturing Proof Force (MPF), Breaking Force (BF), bend deflection and elongation requirements.
- Mandatory tests: dimensional checks, tensile tests (calibrated machines per ISO 7500-1), bend tests, sampling and lot sizes.
- Marking and traceability
- Grade marking, manufacturer identification, traceability marks and manufacturer’s certificate requirements.
- Environmental aspects
- Considered within the standard and manufacturing practices.
Applications
- Selection and manufacture of chain slings, lifting assemblies and rigging used in maritime, offshore, chemical and general industrial environments where corrosion resistance and elevated temperature performance are required.
- Used by chain manufacturers, lifting equipment designers, rigging and lifting engineers, safety inspectors, procurement teams and testing laboratories to specify, produce and verify compliant stainless-steel sling chains.
- Useful for ensuring safety, traceability and conformity in lifting operations subject to regulatory and workplace safety requirements.
