ISO 18558:2015 specifies the testing method for determining the elastic modulus and bending strength of ceramic tubes or rings at ambient temperature by the compression tests on split ring pieces. Methods for test piece preparation, test modes and load rates, data collection, and reporting procedures are addressed. This International Standard applies primary to the ceramic materials including monolithic fine ceramic, glass, whisker- or particulate reinforced ceramic composites, but not available for fibre reinforced ceramic composites. This test method may be used for material research, quality control, and characterization and design data generation purpose.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 18558:2015 specifies a standardized test method for determining elastic modulus and bending strength of ceramic tubes and rings (fine/advanced ceramics) using compression tests on split-ring pieces. The standard describes test-piece preparation, machine and fixture requirements, loading modes and rates, data acquisition, calculation methods and reporting. It applies mainly to monolithic fine ceramics, glass and whisker- or particulate‑reinforced ceramic composites (not applicable to fibre‑reinforced ceramic composites). Use cases include material research, quality control, characterization and generation of design data.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: Symmetrical compression of a split ring; elastic modulus from the slope of load–displacement in the elastic range, bending strength from the fracture (critical) load.
- Test pieces & preparation: Cut rings from tubes, grind/polish faces to 0.02 mm parallelism, chamfer edges for strength tests; two surface‑treatment options (as‑fired/tube property or machined/material property). Slot/gap typically 2–3 mm and normally ≈0.2·r.
- Geometry limits: Recommended width-to-radius ratio 0.2 ≤ b/R ≤ 1.0 and other dimensional constraints to ensure validity of formulas.
- Apparatus & measurement accuracy: Testing machine compliant with ISO 7500-1; load accuracy 1% or better; displacement resolution 0.001 mm or better; caliper resolution 0.02 mm for dimensions.
- Loading rates: Elastic modulus tests at 0.1 mm/min; strength tests at 0.5 mm/min (time-to-failure typically 10–60 s; actual rate may depend on ring size).
- Sample size: Minimum 6 specimens; ≥30 recommended for statistical/Weibull analysis.
- Calculations & reporting: Standard formulae provided for elastic modulus and bending strength using measured ΔP, Δδ and ring dimensions. Test report must include reference to ISO 18558:2015, lab ID, environment conditions, specimen surface finish, material description (batch/code), date and other key items.
Applications and who uses it
- Materials researchers and ceramic scientists validating mechanical behavior of tubular ceramic components.
- Quality-control and R&D laboratories in ceramics manufacturing (monolithic, particulate/whisker‑reinforced ceramics).
- Design and mechanical engineers requiring validated elastic modulus and bending strength data for component design and simulation.
- Suppliers and end‑users of ceramic tubes/rings who need reproducible, comparable test results for specifications or acceptance testing.
