Overview
ISO 18893:2014 - Mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs): Safety principles, inspection, maintenance and operation provides safety guidance and minimum technical safety requirements for MEWPs intended to position persons, tools and materials. The standard supports prevention of personal injury, property damage and accidents, and establishes criteria for inspection, maintenance and safe operation. Requirements apply unless national or local regulations are more stringent.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and definitions: Applies to all MEWPs consisting of a work platform with controls, an extending structure and a chassis. Defines terms such as authorized person, configuration, maintenance, modification and operator.
- General requirements: Emphasizes job planning, risk assessment, competent supervision and the responsibility of employers, managers and operators for safe use.
- System of work: Requires documented procedures covering planning, selection and preparation of suitable MEWPs, site preparation, supervision, prevention of unauthorized use and emergency recovery procedures.
- Manuals and documentation: Manufacturer’s operation and maintenance manuals must accompany each delivery and be available to operators and maintenance personnel. Replacement manuals must be supplied by a qualified person if the manufacturer no longer exists.
- Record retention: Owners must retain records of ownership, inspections, repairs, recalls and modifications - typically for a minimum of three years after sale or until the MEWP is permanently removed from service.
- Maintenance: Covers preventive maintenance, maintenance inspections, training of maintenance personnel, safety precautions during maintenance, approved replacement parts and manufacturer safety bulletins.
- Operation: Addresses planning of lifts, operator training and familiarization (see ISO 18878), workplace inspection, understanding hazardous locations, assistance to operators and specific operational requirements.
- Modifications and repairs: Modifications or additions require prior written permission of the manufacturer or instructions from a qualified person; modified CE-approved MEWPs may require re-certification.
- Informative annexes: Includes pictograms and guidance on common MEWP misuse.
