ISO 18932:2009 provides specifications for adhesive mounting materials for use in attaching prints, including photographic, electrophotographic, electrostatic, thermal transfer or inkjet prints to mounting boards, album leaves, file cards and other supports. ISO 18932:2009 covers both pressure-sensitive and thermally-activated adhesives. Spray adhesives are specifically excluded from ISO 18932:2009.

Thermally‑activated classification

Performance and safety

Adhesive shall not cause discoloration and must pass the bleed test and Photographic Activity Test (PAT) requirements.
Minimum peel/bond strength: 1,3 N/cm (132 g‑force/cm) when tested per the standard’s modified peel tests.
Required testing: unaged and heat‑aged peel tests; additional tests for initial stress and adhesive shelf‑life where applicable.

Physical and handling requirements

No surface textures that can imprint the image; uniform thickness; no voids or particles; uniform color when transparent/translucent.
Liners must remove cleanly without delamination or transfer.
Blocking, shelf‑life and storage guidance (optimum ~23 °C, 50% RH; avoid prolonged ≥38 °C).

Applications and users

Practical uses: photo mounting for albums, framing, displays, mountboards, archival files and commercial print finishing.

Who uses it: adhesive manufacturers, imaging material and mounting board producers, photographic labs, framers, archivists, conservators (note: conservators may prefer reversible systems but can use this for permanent solutions), and quality/standards managers specifying photo‑safe mounting systems.
