ISO 19142:2010 specifies the behaviour of a web feature service that provides transactions on and access to geographic features in a manner independent of the underlying data store. It specifies discovery operations, query operations, locking operations, transaction operations and operations to manage stored parameterized query expressions.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 19142:2010 - Geographic information - Web Feature Service (WFS) defines the behaviour of a Web Feature Service that provides access to and transactions on geographic features, independent of the underlying data store. The standard specifies discovery, query, locking and transaction operations, plus management of stored parameterized query expressions and service metadata. It covers request/response encodings (XML and KVP), namespaces, version negotiation and error reporting to enable interoperable web-based feature access in spatial data infrastructures.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Operations and APIs: Standardizes key WFS operations such as GetCapabilities, DescribeFeatureType, GetFeature, GetPropertyValue, LockFeature, GetFeatureWithLock, and transaction management for Create/Update/Delete workflows.
- Query expressions: Defines ad hoc and stored parameterized query support, predicate expression encoding, and query expression semantics.
- Locking and transactions: Specifies feature locking behaviour (including a state machine for locks), lock-related requests/responses and transactional consistency for edits.
- Encodings & bindings: Covers XML schema encodings and Key-Value Pair (KVP) encodings for requests and responses; discusses use of schemaLocation and namespace handling.
- Resource and version management: Rules for resource identifiers, version numbering and negotiation to support client–server compatibility.
- Common elements & error handling: Property referencing (XPath subset), presentation/resolve/input parameters, exception reporting and response parameter semantics.
- Service discovery & capabilities: Structure and constraints for capabilities documents, FeatureType listing and parameter domains.
Practical applications and users
ISO 19142 is essential for organizations and projects that need standardized, interoperable web access to vector feature data:
- GIS platform and server vendors implementing WFS endpoints to ensure compatibility with client software.
- Client developers (desktop, web, mobile) building feature query, display and editing tools that interoperate with multiple WFS servers.
- Data providers & portals publishing authoritative spatial feature data (government, utilities, transportation, environment).
- Systems integrators and SDI architects** designing spatial data infrastructures that require transactional feature access, locking and standardized discovery.
- Use cases include feature editing workflows, synchronized distributed datasets, spatial query services, and feature-centric web mapping applications.
