ISO 19212:2006 specifies methods for determining the temperature dependence of the shear strength of the adhesive or adhesive bond in adhesively bonded products.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 19212:2006 specifies standardized methods to determine the temperature dependence of shear strength for adhesives and adhesive bonds. The standard describes how to prepare specimens, condition and test them across a wide temperature range, and report results so adhesive performance vs temperature can be compared reliably. It is intended for use with metal and wood adherends and includes practical guidance (Annex A) on interpreting temperature-dependence behavior.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Measurement of shear strength of adhesive bonds as a function of temperature to evaluate durability and design suitability.
- Test methods:
- Conditioning and atmosphere: Use one of the standard atmospheres in ISO 291. Initial conditioning typically 168 h (48 h for heat‑cured adhesives).
- Temperature range and increments: Tests cover approximately −40 °C to +180 °C, commonly measured at 20 °C intervals (e.g., −40, −20, 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 140, 160, 180 °C). Additional conditioning at each test temperature: metals 10 min, wood 24 h. Humidity control is not required at these temperatures.
- Specimen numbers: Metals - at least 5 specimens per test temperature; Wood - at least 12 specimens per test temperature (from ≥3 bonded blocks when applicable).
- Results and reporting:
- Plot shear strength versus temperature (typical output of ISO 19212).
- Classify failure patterns per ISO 10365.
- Test report must document adhesive ID, adherend materials and preparation, bonding and curing conditions, bond thickness, test speed, individual and mean strengths, standard deviation, failure mode, deviations, and test date.
Applications and who uses it
- Adhesive manufacturers - product development and specification of temperature performance.
- Materials and design engineers - selecting adhesives for assemblies exposed to temperature extremes (building interiors, transport, electrical appliances, furniture).
- Quality control and test laboratories - routine verification of batch performance and compliance with specifications.
- Specification writers and procurement - comparing adhesives by quantified shear‑strength vs temperature curves for application suitability.
