Overview
ISO 19322:2018 - Resilient floor coverings - Specification for floor coverings based on thermoplastic polymers - defines the required characteristics, testing and marking for thermoplastic resilient floor coverings supplied in roll, plank or tile form. The standard helps manufacturers, specifiers and buyers ensure products meet minimum performance criteria and informs consumer choice by linking to a use-intensity classification (see ISO 10874).
Key technical topics and requirements
ISO 19322:2018 covers product requirements, classification and marking and references a suite of test methods. Major technical topics include:
- Product forms and definitions: homogeneous vs heterogeneous constructions, wear layer, factory finish, backing, planks and tiles.
- Dimensional and geometric requirements: length, width, side length, squareness and straightness (ISO 24341, ISO 24342).
- Thickness and mass: overall thickness and layer thickness (ISO 24346, ISO 24340) and mass per unit area (ISO 23997).
- Dimensional stability and curling after heat exposure (ISO 23999).
- Indentation and residual indentation (ISO 24343‑1 and ISO 24343‑2).
- Flexibility for sheet products (ISO 24344).
- Peel resistance of backing (ISO 24345).
- Color fastness to artificial light and light stability (ISO 105‑B02, ASTM F1515).
- Seam strength, scratch resistance (Annex A), furniture-leg movement simulation (ISO 16581) and castor chair suitability (ISO 4918).
- Classification by level of use (domestic, commercial, light industrial - classes 21–43) with minimum values for overall thickness, residual indentation and seam strength (see ISO 10874 for scheme).
- Marking requirements to allow informed consumer choice.
The standard explicitly excludes certain product types specified in ISO 10581, ISO 10582, ISO 10595, ISO 11638, ISO 10575, ISO 10577, ISO 24011 and ISO 26986.
Practical applications and users
ISO 19322:2018 is practical for:
- Manufacturers - product specification, quality control and labelling for thermoplastic resilient flooring (rolls, planks, tiles).
- Test laboratories - performing referenced test methods and certification testing.
- Architects, interior designers and specifiers - selecting floor coverings to meet performance needs by class (domestic, commercial, industrial).
- Procurement teams and facility managers - ensuring purchased flooring meets durability, indentation, seam and castor‑chair performance.
- Regulatory bodies and certification schemes - verifying compliance and harmonizing requirements.
