ISO 19668:2017 specifies a procedure by which elemental detection limits in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) can be estimated from data for a particular sample in common analytical situations and reported. This document is applicable to homogeneous materials and is not applicable if the depth distribution of elements is inhomogeneous within the information depth of the technique.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 19668:2017 - "Surface chemical analysis - X‑ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) - Estimating and reporting detection limits for elements in homogeneous materials" provides a standardized, practical procedure to estimate and report elemental detection limits from XPS measurements. The standard is specifically applicable to homogeneous materials and is not intended where the element depth distribution is inhomogeneous within the XPS information depth.
Keywords: ISO 19668:2017, XPS, X‑ray photoelectron spectroscopy, detection limits, surface chemical analysis, homogeneous materials.
Key topics and requirements
- Purpose: Calculate elemental detection limits from actual XPS data and report them consistently.
- Applicability: Only for homogeneous samples; inapplicable for inhomogeneous depth distributions.
- Required data: knowledge of elemental relative sensitivity factors (RSFs) (or use of AMRSFs with transmission corrections), summed intensities for detected elements, and the binding energy (BE) or kinetic energy (KE) of the target photoelectron peak (known to ~10 eV).
- Spectra requirements: spectrum covering the expected BE of the specified element; at least 20 background data points free of sharp spectral features.
- Composition guidance: if the specified element is detected, its concentration should be
