ISO 19712-1:2008 establishes a classification system for solid surfacing materials according to their performance. ISO 19712-1:2008 also specifies property requirements for the various types of solid surfacing materials covered by this classification. Requirements are specified for the types that are most generally used, but additional types may be added as required. The specified limit values apply to the most commonly used types of material, but within each classification it may be possible to obtain variants having much higher performance values. These materials are characterized by their homogeneous appearance, renewable surfaces and inconspicuous seams. They are generally classified as solid surface sheets (designed for horizontal, vertical, wet and dry applications) and solid surface shapes (including, but not limited to, kitchen sinks, bathroom sinks, vanity tops, showers, tubs and spas). The important properties of solid surfacing materials are water resistance, thermal shock resistance, heat resistance, impact resistance, stain and chemical resistance, cigarette burn resistance, colour stability, hardness, bacterial and fungal resistance, cleanability, hygiene, seamability and renewability.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 19712-1:2008 - Plastics - Decorative solid surfacing materials - Part 1: Classification and specifications - defines a performance-based classification and minimum property requirements for solid surfacing materials (SSM). It covers homogeneous, renewable decorative surfacing cast into sheets or shaped products (sinks, vanity tops, showers, tubs, etc.), and is intended for manufacturers, fabricators, installers and specifiers of solid surface sheets and shapes.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Classification and scope: SSMs are grouped by performance and application (horizontal, vertical, wet, dry). Requirements target the most common material types; higher-performance variants are allowed.
- Core properties specified: water resistance, thermal shock resistance, heat resistance, impact resistance, stain & chemical resistance, cigarette-burn resistance, colour stability, hardness, bacterial/fungal resistance, cleanability, seamability and renewability.
- Test methods and compliance: Where multiple test methods exist for a property (e.g., wet heat, staining, lightfastness), meeting any specified method constitutes compliance - the chosen method must be stated in reports.
- Selected numeric limits from the standard:
- Thickness variation: permitted deviations for thin sheets (e.g., ±0.25 mm for ~3–4 mm nominal thickness, ±0.30 mm for ~4.5–5 mm).
- Impact testing: typical drop-height used is 610 mm for large-diameter ball tests.
- Cigarette-burn resistance: minimum time-to-failure values are around 100–110 seconds depending on product type.
- Deflection under load: for 12 mm test samples a maximum deflection of
