This document specifies a test method for the determination of brittle crack arrest toughness. It is applicable to ferritic steel base metals exhibiting ductile to brittle transition behaviour. Applicable materials are rolled steel plates. It is intended for materials with a tensile strength of 950 MPa or less and a test piece thickness of 200 mm or less. The range of arrest temperatures is between −196 °C and +100 °C. This document can be applied to flat rolled steel plates but not to flattened steel pipes because the flattening can cause changes in arrest toughness.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 20064:2019 - Metallic materials - Steel - Method of test for the determination of brittle crack arrest toughness, Kca - specifies a standardized laboratory method to measure brittle crack arrest toughness (Kca) for ferritic steels that show a ductile-to-brittle transition. The procedure uses wide, flat rolled steel plates with a controlled temperature gradient across the width; a brittle crack is initiated from an edge notch and allowed to propagate and arrest. Kca is calculated from the applied stress and the arrested crack length using stress‑intensity factors, giving the arrest toughness at the local arrest temperature.
Key scope limits:
- Applicable to rolled steel plates (not to flattened steel pipes)
- Tensile strength ≤ 950 MPa
- Test piece thickness ≤ 200 mm
- Arrest temperature range: −196 °C to +100 °C
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test piece design and preparation: wide plate configurations, extension and tab plates, welding of assemblies, and integrated test piece geometry.
- Test equipment and loading: requirements for testing machines, force implementation and calibration, loading pins, impact equipment and impact energy determination.
- Temperature control and monitoring: establishing a stable temperature gradient and measuring the arrest temperature (Annex A provides devices/methods).
- Crack initiation and propagation: notch preparation, impact/secondary loading methods (Annex D and E describe alternative initiation techniques).
- Data and calculations: validation of arrested cracks, assessment of impact energy, and calculation of Kca using stress intensity factors (Annex C addresses curved crack calculations).
- Test procedures and reporting: pre-test, impact, post-test operations, fracture surface observations, and mandatory report contents.
- Annexes cover methods for obtaining Kca at a specific temperature (Annex B) and dynamic measurement techniques (Annex F).
Practical applications and intended users
ISO 20064:2019 is intended for:
- Material testing laboratories conducting fracture and toughness testing of ferritic steel plates
- Metallurgists and R&D teams developing and qualifying steels for low-temperature performance
- Structural and pressure‑vessel engineers assessing crack-arrest capability for cryogenic tanks, pressure vessels, and shipbuilding applications
- Quality and certification bodies that require standardized evidence of crack arrest performance for design or regulatory compliance
Practical value:
- Evaluates crack arrest behavior at plate thickness and service-relevant temperatures
- Supports safer design against brittle fracture propagation in critical steel structures
- Provides a repeatable method to compare materials and manufacturing effects (e.g., rolling, welding)
