This document specifies an instrumental method for determining the image clarity on paint films (coatings) by measuring reflection from the specimen surface or transmission through the specimen. The method can be applied only to a flat surface.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 20266:2018 specifies an instrumental method to determine image clarity - the degree of sharpness of an image reflected from or transmitted through a paint film (coating). The method measures optical response from a flat specimen using a slit, collimating optics, an optical mask and a light receptor, then calculates image clarity as a percentage. ISO 20266 is intended for quality control and specification of coatings where accurate reproduction of reflected or transmitted images is important.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and limitation: Applies only to flat surfaces; results are sensitive to temperature and humidity.
- Apparatus essentials: light source, slit, collimating/de-collimating lenses, optical mask, black glass standard (see ISO 17221 for geometry).
- Specimen preparation: follow ISO 1513 (examination/preparation) and ISO 1514 (standard panels); film thickness measured per ISO 2808.
- Sampling and handling: sampling per ISO 15528; condition specimens at (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5)% RH for ≥16 h; avoid fingerprints and dust.
- Specimen size and thickness: recommended size 30 × 30 mm to 150 × 150 mm; thickness
