This document specifies safety requirements for rowing equipment. This document is intended to be read in conjunction with the general safety requirements of ISO 20957‑1. This document is applicable to rowing type stationary training equipment, hereinafter referred to as rowing equipment, within the classes H, S and I and classes A, B and C regarding accuracy.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 20957-7:2020 is the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) safety standard for stationary rowing training equipment. It defines additional specific safety requirements and test methods for rowing-type stationary training machines and is intended to be read together with the general safety requirements in ISO 20957‑1. The standard applies to rowing equipment classes H, S, I and accuracy classes A, B, C.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard covers design, performance and verification requirements with specified test methods. Major technical points include:
- Temperature rise: Accessible surfaces must not exceed ≤ 65 °C (tested per Clause 6.3).
- Seat security: Seat must not derail when a load of ≥ 100 N is applied in all directions (Clause 5.2.4 and 6.2).
- Intrinsic loading: Equipment shall withstand 2.5 × the maximum user body mass ±5% specified by the manufacturer, or 2 500 N, whichever is greater (Clause 5.3, tested in 6.4).
- Handles and motion: For flexible‑connected handles (rope, belt, chain) the handle mass without flexible member ≤ 600 g and handle travel > 1 600 mm measured from foot rest centre to handle centre (Clause 5.4).
- Ropes/belts/chains: Attachment systems shall withstand a specified static load (see Clause 5.5 and 6.1.6 for the defined test procedure).
- Foot straps and supports: Each foot strap must resist a pull of ≥ 500 N; each foot support must resist a push of ≥ 1 000 N (Clauses 5.6–5.7 and tests in 6.5–6.6).
- Endurance: Fatigue testing of cycles - 12 000 cycles for class H and 100 000 cycles for classes S and I - under maximum user load and maximum resistance (Clause 5.8, test 6.7).
- Stability: Equipment shall not tip over during stability testing (Clause 5.9, test 6.8).
- Power display accuracy (Class A): For outputs ≥ 50 W tolerance ±10%; for
