ISO 21254-1:2011 defines terms used in conjunction with, and the general principles of, test methods for determining the laser-induced damage threshold and for the assurance of optical laser components subjected to laser radiation.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 21254-1:2011 - “Lasers and laser-related equipment - Test methods for laser‑induced damage threshold - Part 1: Definitions and general principles” defines the vocabulary and fundamental principles used to measure and report laser‑induced damage threshold (LIDT) of optical components. It sets out the general approach to laser damage testing (sampling, apparatus, test procedure, units and reporting) that underpins Parts 2–4 of the ISO 21254 series.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Definitions and terms: Standardized definitions for surface damage, bulk damage, 1‑on‑1 and S‑on‑1 tests, effective area/beam diameter, effective pulse duration, threshold, and related symbols and units.
- Measurement units: Typical units are energy density (J/cm²) for pulsed lasers, linear power density (W/cm) for cw/long‑pulse operation; power density (W/cm²) and other symbols are defined in the standard.
- Sampling requirements: Guidance on use of actual parts or witness specimens (same substrate/finish and same coating run for coated parts).
- Test principle and setup: Basic test-chain components are described - laser source, variable attenuator, waveplate, focusing system, beam diagnostic unit, online damage detector and specimen compartment. The specimen is positioned at a defined target plane and multiple unexposed sites are tested.
- Test programs: Distinguishes 1‑on‑1 (single‑pulse per site) and S‑on‑1 (series of pulses per site) approaches; S‑on‑1 better represents operational fatigue but requires more effort.
- Stability and accuracy: Pulse‑to‑pulse variations of maximum power density should be controlled (documented error budget); as a minimum the standard notes pulse‑to‑pulse variation
