This document series describes a generic system for the exchange of data between truck chassis manufacturers and bodywork manufacturers. It applies to commercial vehicles as defined in ISO 3833, having a maximum gross vehicle mass above 3 500 kg. The process of exchanging the above information can involve: — chassis manufacturer; — chassis importer; — chassis dealer; — one or more bodywork manufacturers; and — bodywork component suppliers, e.g. manufacturers of demountable bodies, cranes and loading equipment, tipping equipment. This document specifically deals with the coding of dimensions and other characteristics of skip loaders, to ensure an efficient and unambiguous communication of installation data between the parties involved.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 21308-7:2018 - "Road vehicles - Product data exchange between chassis and body work manufacturers (BEP) - Part 7: Coding of skip loader bodywork" defines a standardized coding system for the exchange of installation and dimensional data for skip loaders. Part of the ISO 21308 BEP (Bodywork Exchange Parameters) series, this standard targets commercial vehicles (per ISO 3833) with a maximum gross vehicle mass over 3 500 kg and enables unambiguous product data exchange between truck chassis manufacturers, bodywork makers, importers, dealers and component suppliers.
Key topics and technical requirements
- BEP coding principles: Uses structured BEP codes (example format: BEP-ppMccc.n.p.q.s.t) to identify each characteristic of the skip loader and its interfaces to the vehicle.
- Units and data types: Preferred units are specified (millimetres for dimensions, kilograms for mass, Newtons for force, degrees for angles) to ensure consistent data reporting.
- Coordinate systems: Defines both the global vehicle coordinate system (ISO 4130) and a local skip loader coordinate origin (x,y,z) tied to main arm pivot and mounting plane for precise positioning.
- Geometrical data & space requirements: Codes for installation points, distances from axles, transport/tipping/loading positions and container handling clearances.
- Container and mass coding: Parameters for container dimensions, masses and mass points in transport and working positions.
- Interfaces: Coding for mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronic interfaces between skip loader, chassis and container.
- XML implementation guidance: Annex A gives instructions for mapping BEP codes to XML for electronic interchange in compliance with ISO 21308-1.
Practical applications and typical users
- Skip loader manufacturers use ISO 21308-7 to encode product dimensions and interface points for accurate vehicle mounting.
- Truck chassis manufacturers, importers and dealers rely on the standard to verify fitment and to supply consistent interface specifications.
- Bodywork integrators and upfitters use BEP-coded data for CAD/CAM modeling, installation planning and to avoid fitment errors.
- Component suppliers (cranes, loading equipment, demountables) use the coding to ensure compatibility.
- Fleet engineers and systems integrators benefit from improved interoperability, reduced engineering change orders, and streamlined data exchange via BEP XML.
