ISO 21461:2012 specifies a laboratory method for the selective determination of the polyaromaticity (aromaticity) of oil present in vulcanized rubber compounds. The technique is based on proton H‑NMR spectrometry and quantifies characteristic aromatic signals (notably bay‑region hydrogens) that indicate the presence of condensed polyaromatic structures and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). This third edition (2012) updates solvents and precision data from previous editions.
