Overview
ISO 22418:2020 - Intelligent transport systems - Fast service announcement protocol (FSAP) defines a lightweight, standardized protocol for fast, local advertisement and discovery of ITS services. FSAP builds on the message formats in ISO/TS 16460 and specifies additional protocol behavior needed for operation within an ITS station as described in ISO 21217. It supports both simple service announcements (SAM/FSAM) and richer service response interactions (SRM/FSRM), and is designed to interoperate conceptually with ETSI and IEEE service announcement approaches.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Message formats and encoding
- Uses the ISO/TS 16460 message structures (FSAM, FSRM) and includes ASN.1 modules (Annex A) for protocol encoding.
- Protocol procedures and lifecycle
- Registration, update and deregistration procedures for service providers and users.
- Service initialization and operation phases; management of FSAP communication handlers and managers.
- Identifiers and addressing
- Services are advertised with a unique ITS application identifier (ITS‑AID).
- Port number usage and management service access points are defined for transport/multiplexing.
- Security and optional features
- Support for secured messages and optional extension elements.
- Optional support for path and flow management and presentation of communication requirements to ITS station management (Annexes B and C).
- Operational requirements
- Procedures for duplicate-service detection, ITS-station internal management communications, and system/mandatory services.
- Conformance and testing
- Clauses on conformance declarations and test methods; an Implementation Conformance Statement (ICS) proforma is provided (Annex D).
Practical applications and who uses it
ISO 22418:2020 is targeted at practitioners and organizations implementing ITS service discovery and local service dissemination:
- Automotive OEMs and ITS application developers implementing in-vehicle service discovery.
- Roadside unit (RSU) vendors and roadside service providers advertising local services (e.g., map updates, localized warnings, parking info).
- Traffic management centres and fleet operators deploying push-style, location-specific services.
- Protocol stack implementers and integrators working with ITS-SCPS (e.g., ITS‑M5/FNTP) and ITS station architectures.
- Test and conformance labs validating FSAP implementations against ISO requirements.
FSAP is especially useful where low-latency, push-based service discovery is required (e.g., mandatory local advisories, dynamic roadside services) and where interoperability with ETSI (SAEM/EN 302 890-1) and IEEE (WSA/IEEE 1609.3) service announcement ecosystems is desirable.
