ISO 22448:2010 specifies, and classifies at seven levels, systems for the protection against theft of earth-moving machinery as defined in ISO 6165, and gives performance criteria for each level. It also gives recommendations for managing critical documentation and theft-sensitive spare parts in protection against theft. It is not applicable to tracking systems that monitor the location of a machine.

Mechanical and physical resistance: mechanical restraints and immobilizers must resist tool-based attacks and be difficult and time-consuming to bypass or replace.

Service and reprogramming controls: Levels VI and VII require that only authorized personnel (manufacturer/dealer) use authorized service tools for setup, maintenance or reprogramming.

Key/profile requirements: key profiles for mechanical locks should have at least 50 permutations (Levels II & III).

Documentation & spare parts: instructions must avoid exposing critical design details; spare parts should be designed to prevent unauthorized substitution.
