ISO 2286-3:2016 specifies a method for the determination, at a specified pressure, of the thickness of rubber- and plastics-coated fabrics, irrespective of the type of substrate employed. It is applicable to single-face, double-face and double-texture coated fabrics, as well as materials in which an expanded layer is included in the coating.

Measurement procedure:

Record ambient temperature and relative humidity.
Clean contact surfaces and zero the gauge with presser foot on anvil.
Place fabric smoothly (no tension or accidental creases), exclude 50 mm from each edge; make multiple thickness measurements evenly across the usable width.
Lower presser foot, allow reading to stabilize (record time if > 30 s), read to 0.01 mm.
The standard requires multiple readings and specifies reporting the arithmetic mean of the determinations.

Test report must include reference to ISO 2286-3, test conditions, fabric description, mean/min/max thickness, pressure used, presser foot diameter, dwell time, deviations and date.
