This document describes a non-destructive method to verify (confirm) the precious metal fineness of finished and semifinished jewellery item(s) considered homogeneous by ED-XRF (energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence), including alloys according to ISO 9202. This document is not suitable for any coated items. WD-XRF (wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence) equipment cannot be used.

ISO 23345:2021 defines a non‑destructive method for confirming the precious metal fineness of finished and semi‑finished jewellery using ED‑XRF (energy‑dispersive X‑ray fluorescence). The standard covers homogeneous items and alloys (including those referenced by ISO 9202). It excludes coated items (coatings must be removed) and explicitly states that WD‑XRF (wavelength‑dispersive XRF) cannot be used. The method provides a practical alternative to destructive assays (for example, cupellation) when preservation of the item is required.
