ISO 23551-10:2016 specifies the safety, design, construction and performance requirements and testing for automatic vent valves (hereafter referred to as "valves") for use with gas burners, gas appliances burning one or more gaseous fuels. It is applicable to valves with declared maximum inlet pressures up to and including 500 kPa (5 bar) of nominal connection sizes up to and including DN 100 (4"). It is applicable to - normally open valves, - electrically operated valves and to valves actuated by fluids where the control valves for these fluids are actuated electrically, but not to any external devices for switching the control signal or actuating energy, and - valves fitted with open position indicator switches. It is not applicable to - valves for burners and appliances using renewables and/or waste gases (i.e. gases having corrosive characteristics), In case valves are in contact with renewables and/or waste gases, it is recommend to use ISO 23551-10:2016 only if explicit information is provided and relevant test methods and requirements are specified. - valves for appliances intended to be installed in the open air and exposed to the outdoor environment, - valves that are connected directly to mains pipe-work or to a container that maintains a standard distribution pressure, and - valves suitable with oil. It is applicable to type testing only.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 23551-10:2016 - "Safety and control devices for gas burners and gas-burning appliances - Particular requirements - Part 10: Vent valves" specifies safety, design, construction, performance and test requirements for automatic vent valves used with gas burners and gas-burning appliances. It covers valves with declared maximum inlet pressures up to and including 500 kPa (5 bar) and nominal connection sizes up to and including DN 100 (4"). This part is intended to be used in combination with ISO 23550 to provide the complete product requirements and is applicable to type testing only.
Key topics and technical requirements
ISO 23551-10:2016 addresses the following technical areas and test criteria:
-
Scope & applicability
- Applies to normally open valves, electrically operated valves, and valves actuated by fluids where the fluid control is electrically actuated.
- Includes valves fitted with open position indicator switches.
- Exclusions: valves for renewables/waste gases (unless explicit test methods/info provided), outdoor-exposed appliances, valves directly connected to mains pipe-work or standard-pressure containers, and valves suitable with oil.
-
Construction and materials
- Requirements for appearance, holes/breather holes, screwed fastenings, jointing, moving parts, sealing caps, dismantling for service, auxiliary channels, and materials (housing, springs, seals, corrosion resistance).
-
Gas connections
- Specifications for making connections, connection sizes, threads, unions, flanges, strainers and actuating mechanisms.
-
Performance and testing
- Leak-tightness (volumetric and pressure-loss methods).
- Rated flow rate, torsion and bending, durability, endurance (including indicator switch endurance).
- Functional tests: opening force, opening time, delay and closing times.
- EMC/electrical requirements and immunity to power-frequency magnetic fields.
-
Marking and documentation
- Marking, installation and operating instructions, and required warning notices.
-
Annexes
- Includes informative and normative annexes (leak-tightness test methods, conversion of pressure loss into leakage rate, regional requirements for Europe/USA/Canada/Japan, EMC tests).
Practical applications and users
ISO 23551-10 is used to:
- Guide manufacturers in designing and testing automatic vent valves for gas appliances.
- Define test protocols for certification bodies and test laboratories performing type testing.
- Inform product engineers, safety assessors, specifiers, and procurement teams when selecting compliant vent valves for industrial, commercial and residential gas-burning appliances.
- Help installers and maintenance personnel understand marking, installation and serviceability requirements.
