Overview
ISO 24034:2020 - “Welding consumables - Solid wire electrodes, solid wires and rods for fusion welding of titanium and titanium alloys - Classification” - defines a chemical-composition based classification system for solid wire electrodes, solid wires and rods used for fusion welding of titanium and titanium alloys. The standard applies across fusion welding processes (TIG, MIG/MAG, plasma, laser beam and other fusion methods) because the same chemical compositions are used for these product forms.

- Classification approach: Two-part symbol - a product symbol (S for solid wire/rod) and a numeric symbol indicating the chemical composition (see Table 1). Annex A explains the numeric symbols and Annex B gives corresponding national classifications.
- Chemical composition: Table 1 lists alloy symbols and composition ranges (main alloying elements and limits for interstitials). The remainder of the alloy is titanium unless otherwise noted.
- Interstitials and sampling: Analysis of C, O, N, H must be performed on samples taken from finished rod/wire after final diameter and processing. Other elements may be analysed from ingot or stock, but finished-wire samples are the referee method in disputes.
- Residual elements limits: Total residual elements shall not exceed 0.20% by mass, with no single residual element exceeding 0.05% (yttrium max 0.005%).
- Unlisted compositions: Consumables not listed in Table 1 are prefixed by the letter Z and have unspecified composition ranges; Z-classified products may not be interchangeable.
- Testing rules: Rounding follows ISO 80000-1 rules. If a test fails, two retests are required and both must meet the requirement; invalid tests (procedural faults) must be repeated.
- Exclusions: Mechanical properties of all-weld metal or welded joints are explicitly not part of this classification.
- Delivery and procurement: Technical delivery conditions reference ISO 544 and ISO 14344.
