This document specifies a method of measurement of the masses of e-liquid vaporised and the aerosol collected from vapour product(s). It does not specify the vapour product(s), the vapour product(s) operational settings or, e-liquid to be used. NOTE Application of this document can be required as a preliminary step for subsequent analyses.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 24197:2022 - "Vapour products - Determination of e-liquid vaporised mass and aerosol collected mass" - specifies a gravimetric method to measure how much e-liquid is vaporised (EVM) and how much aerosol is collected (ACM) from vapour products. It defines terminology (EVM, ACM, puff block), required apparatus, preparation and handling practices, and step‑by‑step weighing procedures. The method is device-agnostic: it does not prescribe specific vapour products, e-liquid composition or operational settings, and is intended as a reproducible preliminary step for subsequent analyses.
Key topics and requirements
- Measurement principle: EVM is determined as the mass loss of the whole vapour product (tank/pod) before and after a defined number of puffs; ACM is determined as the mass gain of a glass fibre filter pad holder used to trap aerosol.
- Gravimetric accuracy: Analytical balances are required with at least 1 mg precision (display 0.1 mg recommended).
- Apparatus: Routine analytical vaping machine in accordance with ISO 20768, soap‑bubble flow meter for puff volume checks, and glass fibre filter pads meeting Annex B specifications.
- Procedure highlights:
- Condition filter pads in test atmosphere 24 h before use and weigh holder+pad before and after aerosol generation.
- Verify puff volume and check for leaks per vaping machine manufacturer guidance.
- Use defined “puff blocks” (e.g., puffs 1–50) and measure EVM/ACM per block to detect non‑linear behaviour or overloading.
- Trap performance: Screening for filter pad overload and performing a trapping efficiency study (Annex A) is recommended to ensure accurate ACM results.
- Data reporting: Report EVM and ACM per puff block, mean and standard deviation, and full test conditions.
Practical applications and users
ISO 24197:2022 is used by:
- Analytical laboratories conducting emissions testing and method validation.
- Vape product manufacturers for product development, quality control and performance comparisons.
- Regulatory bodies and public health researchers who require standardized mass‑based emission metrics.
- Contract testing organizations preparing data for chemical analyses (EVM/ACM often precede constituent quantification).
Typical use cases:
- Quantifying e-liquid consumption and aerosol output for device benchmarking.
- Establishing consistent sample collection for chemical or toxicological assays.
- Supporting compliance testing and interlaboratory comparison studies.
