ISO 24454:2008 identifies specific test procedures for the acquisition and presentation of comparable multi-point data for selected properties of rubber compounds. The data for each property are generated, using a single test method, as a function of important variables such as time, temperature and environmental effects. An important application consists in helping different suppliers produce material specification sheets in which the same set of properties is measured using the same conditions. Guidance on the interpretation of results is provided.

ISO 24454:2008 - Rubber - Acquisition and presentation of comparable multi-point data provides standardized procedures for acquiring and presenting multi-point test data for selected properties of rubber compounds. The standard defines how to generate property data as a function of key variables (time, temperature and environmental effects) so results from different suppliers and laboratories are directly comparable. Annex A gives guidance on interpretation of results.

Test piece preparation & conditioning

Follow ISO 2393 for mixing/moulding; document equipment and cycles.
Timing windows: mixing→moulding (24 h to 1 week); moulding→conditioning (16 h to 4 weeks).
Standard laboratory conditions: (23 ± 2) °C and 50 % RH (note guidance if using 27 °C).

Main variables

Temperature, time and environmental agents (liquids, UV, ozone, mechanical cycling).
Use integral multiples of 10 °C for series of temperatures, replacing 20 °C with 23 °C.

Mechanical and viscoelastic testing

Tensile stress–strain: ISO 37, Type 1/1A dumbbells, 500 mm/min, minimum six temperatures (one = 23 °C).
Dynamic properties: ISO 4664-1 in shear mode (DMTA recommended); frequencies at 0.1, 1, 10 and 100 Hz; strain amplitude ±2 %, zero prestrain; minimum six temperatures.
Stress relaxation: ISO 3384 Method A, measure after 167 h at a minimum of four temperatures.
Creep: ISO 8013, measure creep increment after 167 h; choose stress to give 20 % initial strain.

Degradation and environmental tests

Heat ageing and lifetime estimation (ISO 11346) to derive T(20000) using Arrhenius or WLF processing.
Resistance to liquids (ISO 1817), accelerated weathering (ISO 4665 - xenon arc), ozone exposure (ISO 1431-1), and fatigue (ISO 6943).

Presentation

Report test conditions, number of specimens (as required by test methods) and processed multi-point results for direct comparison.

Practical applications and users

Enables consistent material specification sheets across suppliers.
