Overview
ISO 26871:2020 - Space systems - Explosive systems and devices defines criteria and requirements for the use of explosive systems and explosive devices on spacecraft, launch vehicles and space vehicle systems. The standard covers design, analysis, verification, manufacturing, operations, safety, transport, handling and product assurance for pyrotechnic and explosively actuated devices used in space systems. To the greatest extent possible it consolidates and tailors requirements from prior standards and lessons learned from launch and space programs. Note: specific man-rating requirements are not addressed.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Design and performance: Requirements for mechanical, electrical and thermal design, dimensioning, reliability and performance of explosive systems and devices.
- Explosive components: Criteria for initiators, detonators, cartridges, gas generators, shaped charges, transfer devices and distribution boxes.
- Explosively actuated devices: Rules for separation nuts/bolts, pullers, pushers (thrusters), cutters and pyro-valves.
- Safety and prevention: Measures to prevent unintentional function, safety caps, faraday caps, safe-and-arm devices and related interface requirements.
- Interfaces and materials: Functional, internal and external interface requirements; material selection and shielding for explosive assemblies.
- Verification and qualification: Inspection, testing, qualification and lot-acceptance processes; recommended test levels and product user manual content.
- Operational handling: Transport, facilities, storage, handling, launch-site procedures, in-service monitoring and information feedback.
- Product assurance: Assembly, integration, dependability, production lot control and deliverables required for certification and flight readiness.
- Annexes: Normative and informative annexes give guidance on safety factors, colour coding, test level customization and user manual templates.
Applications and Who Uses It
ISO 26871:2020 is essential for professionals and organizations involved in the lifecycle of spaceborne explosive systems, including:
- Spacecraft systems engineers and pyro-technical designers
- Launch vehicle integrators and separation system designers
- Manufacturers of initiators, safe-and-arm devices, gas generators and pyrotechnic hardware
- Test laboratories, quality assurance and product assurance teams
- Launch operators, ground-support equipment (GSE) providers and safety officers
- Procurement and compliance personnel ensuring components meet verification and transport requirements
Use cases include separation system design, deployment mechanisms, stage separation, valve actuation, and controlled fragmentation or cutting operations.
Related Standards
ISO 26871:2020 is intended to be used alongside other space-sector standards and national regulations governing safety, testing and materials. It complements broader space system standards and industry standards (for example, ECSS and applicable national explosives regulations) when defining program-specific requirements.
