Overview
ISO 27509:2020 - Petroleum and natural gas industries - Compact flanged connections with IX seal ring - specifies detailed manufacturing, testing and marking requirements for circular steel and nickel‑alloy compact flanged connections (CFCs) and associated IX seal rings. The standard covers designated pressure classes CL 150 (PN 20) to CL 1500 (PN 260) for nominal sizes DN 15 (NPS ½) to DN 1200 (NPS 48), and CL 2500 (PN 420) for sizes DN 15 (NPS ½) to DN 600 (NPS 24). Applicable components include weld‑neck flanges, blind flanges, paddle spacers/blanks, integral flanges, orifice spacers, reducing threaded flanges and rigid interfaces for process piping in the petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries. Temperature range: −196 °C to +250 °C. Note: the standard is not applicable to external pressure.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Design and assembly principles: detailed guidance on flange geometry, bevel angles, assembly and elastoplastic behaviour during first make‑up.
- Materials: requirements for flange and seal‑ring metals (steel and nickel alloys) and bolting materials, including traceability and marking.
- IX seal rings: dimensions, manufacture, machining tolerances, coating and colour coding, plus specific testing and inspection requirements.
- Strength, pressure/temperature ratings and leak tightness: prescribed ratings, pressure testing and leak‑tightness verification consistent with process piping design codes.
- Dimensions, tolerances and surface finish: standardized flange and seal ring dimensions (weld‑neck, blind, integral, orifice spacers, reducing threaded flanges), with tolerances and surface finish requirements.
- Bolting and fasteners: bolt dimensions, masses and qualified tensioning procedures.
- Quality management and documentation: manufacturing controls, NDT (including ultrasonic testing), marking, traceability and repair/handling guidance (normative Annexes include pressure/temperature ratings, bolt data and handling/installation requirements).
- Safety margin: flange designs selected to achieve a minimum safety factor of 2.0 at the design pressure.
Practical applications and who uses ISO 27509:2020
- Engineers and designers specifying compact flanged connections for piping systems in oil & gas, petrochemical and LNG facilities.
- Manufacturers and fabricators producing CFCs and IX seal rings who must meet ISO material, machining and inspection criteria.
- Procurement and inspection teams verifying supplier conformance, marking and traceability.
- Offshore and onshore plant operators seeking reduced mass/footprint connections with improved leak tightness as an alternative to conventional ASME/EU flanges or clamp connectors.
- Integrity and maintenance engineers using the standard’s handling, assembly and repair guidance to avoid damage and ensure reliable leak performance.
