Overview
ISO 27730:2012 defines the International Standard Collection Identifier (ISCI) - a persistent, globally unique identifier designed to identify collections, fonds, archival series and parts thereof. The standard specifies the structure, syntax, and persistence rules for ISCIs, and recommends a core set of metadata elements to describe collections for discovery and machine-to-machine exchange. ISO 27730 is intended for cultural heritage and other organizations that manage collections, including libraries, archives, museums and publishers.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Identifier structure: ISCI consists of two parts: an ISIL (organization identifier from ISO 15511) in square brackets followed immediately by a collection identifier string:
ISCI [ISIL]collectionIdentifierString
- ISIL dependency: An organization must have an ISIL (ISO 15511) before assigning ISCIs; the ISIL is used as the ISCI prefix.
- Collection identifier string:
- Variable length, at least one character, uses UCS/Unicode characters (per ISO/IEC 10646).
- Case-insensitive and may include whitespace or other characters.
- Must be unique and persistent - once assigned it must never be reused.
- Persistence rules for change: When collections move, merge or split, the standard prescribes how ISCIs and metadata should be retained, superseded or re-assigned to preserve provenance and linkage.
- Presentation: When displayed, the ISCI is preceded by the label “ISCI ” (not part of the identifier itself).
- Metadata: A recommended core metadata set (based on the Dublin Core Collections Application Profile) includes mandatory elements such as Title, Description, Language, Collection identifier, Custodial history, Date collection accumulated, Owner, Type, and elements identifying location/access. Recommended elements include Subject, Collector, Item type/format, Sub-/Super-Collection relationships and Relation (replaces / isReplacedBy).
- Harvesting: The standard recommends making metadata harvestable (OAI-PMH suggested) to support aggregation and discovery.
Applications and users
- Practical uses: global collection-level discovery, linking distributed or multi-institutional/collective collections, supporting digitization projects, search engine and aggregator indexing, provenance tracking and collection management.
- Typical users: libraries, archives, museums, memory organizations, publishers, aggregators, cataloguers and digital preservation teams that need a persistent, interoperable collection identifier for discovery, exchange and management.
