ISO 30005:2024 - Ships and marine technology - Ship recycling management - Information control for hazardous materials in the manufacturing chain of shipbuilding and ship operations - specifies requirements and guidance for managing, communicating and maintaining information on hazardous materials used throughout shipbuilding and ship operations. Aligned with the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, this second edition updates the Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) framework and improves controls for suppliers, shipowners and shipyards.

Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM): A ship-specific IHM is required and divided into Part I (structure and equipment), Part II (operationally generated wastes) and Part III (stores and other items prior to recycling).

Scope and listing rules: Tables (A.1, A.2, B.1, B.2) define which materials and items must be listed for new ships, new installations and for recycling preparations. Some materials and consumer goods have defined exemptions.

Information collection & maintenance: Processes differ for new vs existing ships; ship-specific IHM must be verified/certified and maintained onboard, with re‑verification at least every five years.

Supplier documentation: Material declarations (MD) and Supplier’s Declarations of Conformity (SDoC) are required and must be controlled; Annexes provide example forms and a standard IHM format.

Planning & implementation: Requirements include planning for IHM creation for new ships, management of IHM during operation, and use of IHMs to plan ship recycling activities.

Monitoring, evaluation and continual improvement: Provisions for resources, document control, monitoring/measurement and compliance evaluation are included.

Added clarifications in 2024 edition: Updated normative references, new definitions, guidance on loosely fitted equipment and fixed batteries, and amendments on thresholds for asbestos, PCBs and related substances.
