Applicable to all forms of textile fabrics. It does not deal with the consolidation and felting shrinkage of fabrics in wet treatments, or the mechanical effects of pressing. The standard atmosphere for testing textile as specified in ISO 139 shall be used for pre-conditining and conditioning.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 3005:1978 is an international standard that specifies a method for determining the dimensional change of textile fabrics caused by exposure to free steam. Applicable to all forms of textile fabrics, this standard focuses on measuring fabric shrinkage or expansion when subjected to saturated steam conditions. It excludes the effects of wet treatment processes like felting and mechanical pressing, addressing only variations induced by steam exposure itself.
The standardized testing environment uses the normal atmosphere specified in ISO 139 for textile conditioning and pre-conditioning, ensuring consistent and accurate measurement results. The test involves subjecting fabric samples to saturated steam within a specialized cylinder and measuring dimensional changes before and after exposure.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Application ISO 3005:1978 applies broadly to all textile fabrics but excludes consolidation and felting shrinkage from wet treatments and mechanical pressing effects. It targets fabric behavior strictly in response to free steam exposure.
-
Testing Environment The standard references ISO 139 to define the normal atmosphere for textile conditioning and testing, ensuring uniform humidity and temperature conditions during fabric sample preparation and measurement.
-
Sample Preparation Fabric specimens measuring 300 mm in length and 50 mm in width are cut carefully, avoiding selvages and edges. Samples are conditioned according to ISO 139 guidelines before testing.
-
Test Apparatus
- A stainless steel frame constructed with fine metal wires supports fabric samples.
- A specialized horizontal steam cylinder, maintained at 100°C with saturated steam flow at approximately 70 g/min (±20%), applies the steam treatment.
- Steam flow and temperature control mechanisms ensure consistent exposure and minimize condensation effects on samples.
-
Test Procedure Conditioned fabric specimens are mounted on the frame and placed inside the steam cylinder. They are exposed to steam for three cycles of 30 seconds each, with brief cooling intervals between. Dimensional measurements are taken before and after exposure to calculate percentage changes in length and width.
-
Data Recording and Analysis Dimensional changes are recorded as percentages relative to initial measurements. The sign convention uses negative values to indicate shrinkage. Measurements are averaged over multiple specimens in both warp and weft directions to assess fabric stability under steam conditions.
Applications
-
Textile Quality Control ISO 3005:1978 is crucial for manufacturers and quality assurance teams to evaluate fabric dimensional stability when exposed to steam - a common step in textile processing and garment manufacturing.
-
Process Optimization Understanding steam-induced dimensional changes helps optimize industrial processes such as steaming, ironing, and heat-setting to reduce fabric distortion and defects.
-
Material Specification Textile developers and designers use this method to assess fabric performance reliably, helping specify materials suitable for products requiring steam treatment or use in humid environments.
-
Research and Development R&D labs analyze fabric behavior under steam exposure to innovate new textiles with enhanced stability, resilience, or special functional properties.
Related Standards
-
ISO 139: Textiles - Standard Atmospheres for Conditioning and Testing Defines the atmospheric conditions for textile testing necessary for standardized conditioning and precise dimensional assessment.
-
ISO 3759: Textiles - Preparation, Marking, and Measuring of Test Specimens and Garments Provides guidelines for specimen preparation and measurement, ensuring test repeatability and accuracy in line marking and dimension recording.
By adhering to ISO 3005:1978, textile industries gain a reliable, standardized approach to quantify dimensional variations induced by saturated steam - a critical factor affecting fabric quality, processing behavior, and end-use performance. This enhances product consistency, reduces manufacturing defects, and supports global trade through harmonized testing protocols.
