This document is applicable to single-faced and single-wall (double-faced) corrugated fibreboard. ISO 3035:2025 specifies a standardized test method for determining the flat crush resistance of corrugated fibreboard used in shipping containers. Applicable to single-faced and single‑wall (double‑faced) corrugated board, this fourth-edition International Standard sets out apparatus, sampling, conditioning, test procedure and reporting rules so laboratories and industry can generate consistent, comparable flat crush data for quality control, design and procurement.

Test piece sizes: Typical circular areas include 5 000 mm² (79.8 mm ± 0.5 mm), 6 450 mm² (90.6 mm ± 0.5 mm) and 10 000 mm² (112.8 mm ± 0.5 mm). Smaller areas (e.g., 3 220 mm², 64.0 mm ± 0.5 mm) may be used when high strength would exceed tester capacity.

Procedure: Test at least 10 valid specimens; platen approach rate 12.5 mm/min ± 0.25 mm/min. Record the maximum force at flute collapse to the nearest 10 N. Address and document leaning flutes or other failure modes.

Calculation & reporting: Flat crush resistance is the mean maximum crushing force divided by the test-piece area and expressed in kilopascals (kPa). Report the mean (nearest kPa), standard deviation and the number of rejected specimens.

Precision: Clause 11 and Annex A present repeatability and reproducibility data based on interlaboratory studies (including TAPPI‑CTS data); see Annex A for details.
