This document specifies a method for the measurement of room acoustic parameters in unoccupied open-plan offices. It specifies measurement procedures, the apparatus needed, the coverage required, the method for evaluating the data, and the presentation of the test report. This document describes a group of single-number quantities indicating the room acoustic performance of an open-plan office in a condition when one person is speaking. They focus on spatial decay of speech while the quantities in ISO 3382-2 focus on temporal decay of sound.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 3382-3:2022 - "Acoustics - Measurement of room acoustic parameters - Part 3: Open plan offices" specifies a standardized method to measure room-acoustic performance in unoccupied open‑plan offices. The standard defines the measurement setup, required apparatus, data collection and evaluation methods, and the format of the test report. Unlike other parts of ISO 3382 that focus on temporal decay, ISO 3382-3 targets the spatial decay of speech and produces single-number indicators that describe how speech level and intelligibility fall off with distance in open working spaces.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Measurement scope: Unoccupied open‑plan offices (includes flexible/activity‑based spaces, libraries, wards where layout resembles open plan).
- Primary quantities: Spatial decay rate of speech (D2,S), speech level at 4 m (Lp,A,S,4m), background noise level (Lp,B), speech transmission index (STI), comfort distance (rC where A‑weighted SPL
