La présente partie de l'ISO 3451 prescrit des méthodes générales et les conditions d'essai appropriées correspondantes, qui permettent de déterminer le taux de cendres d'une gamme de plusieurs plastiques (résines et compositions). Les conditions particulières choisies peuvent être incluses dans les spécifications relatives au matériau plastique considéré. Les conditions particulières applicables aux plastiques renforcés de fibres de verre, contenant des charges et/ou certains additifs, sont prescrites dans les autres parties de l'ISO 3451 relatives aux types spécifiques de plastiques (voir l'avant-propos).
