ISO 3503:2015 specifies a method for checking the leak tightness under internal pressure of assembled joints between mechanical fittings and plastic pressure pipes when subjected to bending. It defines the calculation method for the average bending radius and how to perform this bending. Checking of the leak tightness under internal pressure is carried out in accordance with the method given in ISO 3458. This test method is not applicable to fusion-welded joints.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 3503:2015 specifies a laboratory test method for leaktightness of mechanical joints between fittings and plastic pressure pipes when assemblies are subjected to bending. The standard defines how to calculate the average bending radius, how to set up the bending gauge and pressurizing system, and how to carry out leak checks under internal pressure. It is intended for mechanical (non–fusion-welded) joints only; fusion-welded joints are excluded.
Key Topics
- Scope and principle: Applies to assembled joints between mechanical fittings and plastic pressure pipes; leakage is checked while the specimen is bent and pressurized.
- Normative reference: Leak testing is performed in accordance with ISO 3458 (mechanical joints - test method for leaktightness under internal pressure).
- Test parameters: The referring standard should supply test medium, pressure, duration, temperature, free length and bending radius. Annex A provides default parameters where applicable:
- Test medium: Water
- Test temperature: 23 °C
- Test pressure: Three times the nominal design pressure of the lowest-rated component in the assembly (see Annex A)
- Bending geometry:
- Free length between fittings: 10 × pipe nominal outside diameter
- Bending radius, R:
- 15 × nominal outside diameter for nominal pressure ≤ 1 MPa (10 bar)
- 20 × nominal outside diameter for nominal pressure > 1 MPa
- Bending gauge bearing length, l = 3/4 of free length (i.e., 7.5 × pipe nominal outside diameter)
- Apparatus: Bending gauge, pressurizing system per ISO 3458, pressure gauges, valves and mounting fixture (see figure in standard).
- Reporting: The test report must reference ISO 3503:2015 and the referring standard and include identification of test pieces, nominal pressure class, bending radius, medium, temperature, duration, pressure, leakage results and any anomalies.
Applications and Users
Who uses ISO 3503:2015:
- Manufacturers of plastic pressure pipes and mechanical fittings validating joint performance under combined pressure and bending
- Independent testing laboratories performing type or routine tests
- Product certification bodies and compliance engineers
- Pipeline designers and specifiers evaluating joint selection for installations subject to bending (e.g., buried pipes, routed installations, vibration or thermal movement) Practical value: ensures mechanical joints maintain leaktightness under realistic bending stresses, supports conformity assessment and product safety.
