This International Standard specifies the requirements for unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-U) pipes and fittings for soil and waste discharge (low and high temperature) inside buildings, as well as the system itself. It does not include buried pipework. It also specifies the test parameters for the test methods referred to in this International Standard. This International Standard is applicable to PVC-U pipes and fittings, as well as assemblies of such pipes and fittings, intended to be used for the following purposes: soil and waste discharge pipework for the conveyance of domestic waste waters (low and high temperature); ventilation pipework associated with 1; rainwater pipework inside the building.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 3633:2002 - "Plastics piping systems for soil and waste discharge (low and high temperature) inside buildings - Unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC‑U)" - defines requirements for PVC‑U pipes, fittings and assemblies used for soil, waste and ventilation pipework and for rainwater discharge inside buildings. The standard excludes buried pipework and does not set raw‑material K‑value or specific fire behaviour requirements. It also specifies test parameters for referenced test methods.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and application: PVC‑U systems for domestic wastewater (low and high temperature), associated ventilation and internal rainwater drainage; not for underground use.
- Material: Raw material must be PVC‑U with approved additives. Where formulation is unknown or disputed, PVC content shall be at least 80% by mass for pipes and 85% for injection‑moulded fittings (EN 1905 referenced).
- Appearance and colour: Smooth, clean internal/external surfaces; ends square to axis. Colour through the wall is required; grey is recommended.
- Geometrical characteristics: Detailed dimensional and tolerance requirements (outside diameters, out‑of‑roundness, lengths, sockets/spigots, chamfers) measured per ISO 3126.
- Mechanical & physical properties: Clauses cover impact resistance, longitudinal reversion, Vicat softening temperature and other performance tests. The standard specifies the test parameters but refers to established test methods (see Related Standards).
- Joints and seals: Requirements for sealing rings, including allowance for non‑PVC‑U retaining means provided joint performance meets clause 9.
- Marking, adhesives and installation: Minimum marking of pipes and fittings, accepted adhesives and installation guidance are included.
Practical applications
- Specification and procurement of PVC‑U soil and waste drainage systems in residential, commercial and institutional buildings.
- Design and installation guidance for building services engineers, plumbers and MEP contractors specifying low/high‑temperature wastewater and internal rainwater drains.
- Quality control and certification testing by manufacturers and inspection bodies to demonstrate conformity with international requirements.
Who uses this standard
- PVC‑U pipe and fitting manufacturers for product design and testing
- Specifiers / engineers (sanitary, plumbing, MEP) selecting drainage materials
- Installers / contractors ensuring compliant installation and system performance
- Regulators, certifiers and testing labs performing compliance checks
