Overview
ISO 3862:2020 specifies requirements for rubber-covered, spiral-wire-reinforced hydraulic hoses and hose assemblies intended for oil-based or water-based fluids. It covers five hose types (4SP, 4SH, R12, R13, R15) in nominal sizes from 6.3 mm to 51 mm, and defines temperature and fluid compatibility ranges. The standard applies to hoses and hose assemblies only - end fittings are excluded - and requires users to confirm hose–fluid compatibility with the manufacturer.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Classification: Types 4SP (medium pressure), 4SH (high pressure), R12 (medium pressure, high-temperature), R13 (high pressure, high-temperature) and R15 (extra-high-pressure, high-temperature).
- Fluid and temperature ranges:
- Oil-based hydraulic fluids (HH, HL, HM, HR, HV per ISO 6743‑4): −40 °C to +100 °C for 4SP/4SH; −40 °C to +120 °C for R12/R13/R15.
- Water-based fluids (HFC, HFAE, HFAS, HFB): −40 °C to +70 °C.
- Water: 0 °C to +70 °C.
- Materials & construction: Rubber inner lining resistant to the intended fluid, multiple spiral steel-wire plies separated by insulating layers, and oil- and weather-resistant rubber cover.
- Dimensions & concentricity: Inside diameter, diameter over reinforcement and outside diameter specified (measured per ISO 4671); concentricity tolerances are defined.
- Performance testing:
- Hydrostatic testing (ISO 1402 / ISO 6605) with proof and burst pressure requirements.
- Pressure-impulse resistance (ISO 6803 and related test methods) for oil- and water-based fluids.
- Tests for low-temperature flexibility, adhesion (ISO 8033), abrasion, fluid resistance (ISO 1817), ozone resistance (ISO 7326) and visual examination.
- Assembly & marking: Hose assemblies must use fittings verified per the standard’s test clauses; marking and test frequency requirements are included (Annex A/B).
