This document specifies the dimensions of the test track for a closed-loop test method to subjectively determine a double lane-change which is one part of the vehicle dynamics and road-holding ability of passenger cars. It is applicable to passenger cars as defined in ISO 3833. It is also applicable to light commercial vehicles up to a gross vehicle mass of 3,5 t.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 3888-1:2018 - "Passenger cars - Test track for a severe lane-change manoeuvre - Part 1: Double lane-change" specifies the geometric layout and marking of a closed‑loop test track used to subjectively evaluate a vehicle’s double lane‑change performance. The standard applies to passenger cars (as defined in ISO 3833) and light commercial vehicles up to a gross vehicle mass of 3.5 t. The test is intended to provide repeatable, discriminatory information about vehicle dynamics and road‑holding behaviour as one component of overall handling evaluation.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Track geometry: Total track length = 125 m. The course is divided into six sections with fixed lengths:
- Section 1: 15 m
- Section 2: 30 m
- Section 3: 25 m (lane offset 3.5 m)
- Section 4: 25 m
- Section 5: 15 m
- Section 6: 15 m
- Track widths are a function of the vehicle width (overall width without mirrors):
- Section 1 width = 1.1 × vehicle width + 0.25 m
- Section 3 width = 1.2 × vehicle width + 0.25 m
- Sections 5 & 6 width = 1.3 × vehicle width + 0.25 m
- Marking: Use cones of minimum height 500 mm. Track limits are tangential to the cones’ base circles; cone placement positions are defined in the standard.
- Test conditions and measurement (informative Annex A):
- Skilled drivers only; a faultless run displaces no cones.
- Measuring distance for average speed and timing runs from the beginning of Section 1 to the end of Section 5.
- Example entry speed for Test 1: (80 ± 3) km/h; Test 2 uses maximum achievable entry speed for course completion.
- Document active control system settings and regenerative braking status; the second edition explicitly recognizes regenerative braking and active control systems.
Applications and users
- Vehicle manufacturers and development engineers use ISO 3888-1:2018 to:
- Benchmark handling and transient lateral dynamics during design and tuning.
- Compare chassis, suspension, steering and stability control configurations.
- Test facilities and independent safety labs implement the specified track layout for reproducible subjective and instrumented evaluations.
- Regulators and research organizations may reference the standard when correlating handling tests with safety studies, although the document notes that this test assesses only one aspect of dynamic behaviour.
