Abstract
Overview
ISO 3892:2000 specifies gravimetric methods to determine the coating mass per unit area of conversion coatings on metallic materials. It covers phosphate and chromate conversion coatings on common substrates (iron, steel, zinc, cadmium, aluminium and its alloys). The standard defines required apparatus, test-piece size considerations, reagents, procedural steps (temperatures, immersion times, electrolytic dissolution where applicable), calculation of mass per unit area and guidance on measurement uncertainty.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and limitations
- Applies only to conversion coatings free of supplementary films (oils, polymeric layers, wax).
- Results give the mean coating mass over the measured area; the method does not detect bare spots or local thin areas.
- Apparatus
- Glass or compatible vessel for dissolution, analytical balance (readability 0.1 mg), electrolytic equipment for certain chromate removals.
- Test-piece requirements
- Max test-piece mass 200 g and a total coated surface area large enough to produce a measurable mass loss. The standard provides minimum total surface area guidance (examples range from about 1 400 cm² for very low coating masses down to 25 cm² for high coating masses).
- Reagents and procedures
- Specific reagents, temperatures and immersion times are prescribed for different coating/substrate combinations (e.g., Cr(VI) solutions, alkaline EDTA mixtures, ammonium dichromate/ammoniac solutions, molten sodium nitrate/sodium hydroxide for aged aluminium coatings). Fresh reagent is required for each test piece.
- Chromate on zinc/cadmium: electrolytic dissolution with the coated test piece as the cathode and a specified cathodic current density.
- Calculation
- Mass per unit area (g/m²) is calculated from the mass loss (m1 − m2) in mg and coated area A in cm²:
- m (g/m²) = 10 × (m1 − m2) / A
- where m1 = mass before stripping (mg), m2 = mass after stripping (mg), A = coated area (cm²).
- Mass per unit area (g/m²) is calculated from the mass loss (m1 − m2) in mg and coated area A in cm²:
- Uncertainty and accuracy
- Under optimum conditions, overall measurement uncertainty is around 5%; accurate area measurement (≈1%) and adequate mass loss are important.
Applications and users
ISO 3892 is used by:
- Quality control and test laboratories in metal finishing and surface treatment plants
- Automotive, aerospace and appliance manufacturers requiring coating mass verification
- Suppliers of conversion coatings and plating shops validating coating weight
- Standards bodies and inspectors performing acceptance testing and research
Practical benefits include reproducible, comparable coating-mass determination for process control, specification compliance and material qualification.
Safety and best practice
The standard contains explicit safety warnings: many reagents (chromates, cyanides, molten salts, strong acids/alkalis) are hazardous - appropriate PPE, fume hoods and waste handling are mandatory.
