This document specifies the minimum values for expected strength as a function of time and temperature in the form of reference lines, for use in calculations on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) homopolymer extruded pipes and injection moulded fittings.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4070:2025 - Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) - Effect of time and temperature on expected strength specifies minimum expected strength (reference lines) for PVDF homopolymer used in extruded pipes and injection‑moulded fittings. The standard provides a mathematical basis for predicting long‑term performance (hoop strength) as a function of time, temperature and stress, enabling consistent design calculations and material assessment for piping components.
Key topics and requirements
- Reference lines for expected strength: Two analytical branches describe log t as a function of temperature (T, K) and hoop stress (σ, MPa). The lower value from the two branches represents the expected hoop strength.
- Variables and scope: Equations use time (hours), temperature (Kelvin) and hoop stress (MPa). Applicable temperature range: 10 °C to 120 °C.
- Extrapolation limits: Time limits for extrapolation are defined (based on 1 year testing at 110 °C and an Arrhenius approach with conservative activation energy). Table values set minimum extrapolation time limits by temperature.
- Tabulated and graphical data: The standard includes reference graphs and a table of expected hoop strength values for common time/temperature combinations (no design factors applied).
- Conformance testing: Annex A specifies demonstrating conformity via ISO 9080 or equivalent internal pressure testing (ISO 1167 series) and statistical plotting (≥97.5 % of results on or above the reference line).
- Wall thickness and S values: Annex B gives principles to derive maximum calculated S values and minimum wall thicknesses for service classes, linking expected strength to application classes and design pressures.
